FEEDING YOUR MICROBIOME

Your gut contains trillions of bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microscopic living things referred to as microorganisms, or microbes, for short. The colonies of these varied microbes that inhabit the cecum section of the large intestine is referred to as the gut microbiome. The proper balance of microbes in our body is extremely important to our health. You may be surprised to learn that the human body is made up of more bacterial cells than actual human cells!

Keeping a healthy gut microbiome is essential for immunity, digestive health, mood and overall wellness. Research states that the best ways to maintain a diverse array of microbes in our digestive system is to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, fermented foods, legumes and high fiber grains.

It is easy to get in a rut of eating the same foods over and over! Do your gut a favor and shake up your produce intake by regularly rotating varieties. Shop seasonal and local if you can. Farmers markets are a great way to find seasonal fruits and veggies you may not find at your local grocer!
